5194ACL 18/36
Track Tape Drive ACL P/N 100188 / U00188
The 5194 is the newest member of the 5190 tape cartridge
subsystem family of products. Each 5194 is a complete subsystem
consisting of one tape formatter and one drive. The 5196 product ID
is designated for a 5194 that is packaged in a Modular Storage System
module.
-
The 5194 is the
36-track CRU only; no cabinet is included.
-
The 5194ACL is the
36-track CRU including a factory-installed seven-cartridge ACL; no
cabinet is included.
-
The 5196 is the
36-track CRU mounted in a Modular Storage System cabinet module.
-
The 5196ACL is the
36-track CRU including a factory-installed seven-cartridge ACL
mounted in a Modular Storage System cabinet module.
Each ACL includes one cartridge
magazine. Additional magazines are available (product ID 519M) for an
additional cost. Each new subsystem includes one data cartridge and one
cleaning cartridge. Compaq does not sell cartridges. One or two 5194 subsystems
can be installed in a single Modular Storage System module and three 5194
modules can be installed in a single Modular Storage System stack, enabling
one to six 5194 subsystems per stack. To install the 5194 in a
new Modular Storage System stack, one 7150 or 7159 pedestal must be ordered
for each stack. The 5194 can be placed in position B, C, or D only. A
7158 frame can be ordered to elevate the 5194 module from position B
to position C if a higher operational position is desired. Refer to the
Modular Storage System product description for more configuration details.
For a single-drive system, a
Tandem 5196 should be ordered. If two subsystems (CRUs) are
required and are to be installed in a single Modular Storage System module,
then both a 5196 and a 5194 should be ordered. These two
subsystems can share the same 3216 controller (K-series) or ServerNet
DA adapter (S-series), or they can be attached to separate 3216
controllers, ServerNet DA adapters, MFCs, or PMF units. If they are
attached to separate controllers, the daisy-chain cable is not used.
Each fiber-optic tape controller
or adapter can support one or two 5194 subsystems. To accommodate the
two-subsystem configuration, a daisy-chain cable that serially connects the
two 5194 subsystems is shipped with all 5194 or 5194ACL
CRU orders. When two 5194 subsystems are attached to a single
controller or adapter in this fashion, there is no performance advantage;
however, this configuration works well when drive availability is the main
criteria. When performance is the main requirement, configure one 5194
per 3216 or ServerNet DA.
A 5194 should never be
ordered as the primary subsystem. It is to be used only as the second CRU in
a module, with the 5196 as the primary subsystem. If both a 5196
and a 5194 are ordered on the same system order, the 5194 will
be installed into the 5196 module in the factory. The minimum system software
requirement for the 5194 and 5196 is Release D30.01.99 or
later for Tandem NonStop™ Himalaya K-series servers and
Release G20 or later for S-series servers.

Descriptions
5194ACL 36-Track Cartridge Tape Subsystem, ACL-equipped CRU
only
This CRU includes a tape formatter, one cartridge drive, a power supply, a
seven-cartridge ACL, IBM compatible data compression (IDRC), and a
daisy-chain cable to connect two 5194 subsystems together when both
are connected to the same fiber-optic controller or adapter. The 5194ACL
should only be ordered to fill the optional subsystem space in a 5196
or 5196ACL Modular Storage System module.
5194 36-Track Cartridge Tape Subsystem, CRU only
This CRU includes a tape formatter, one cartridge drive, a power supply, IBM
compatible data compression (IDRC), and a daisy-chain cable to connect two
5194 subsystems together when both are connected to the same
fiber-optic controller or adapter. The 5194ACL should only be ordered
to fill the optional subsystem space in a 5196 or 5196ACL
Modular Storage System module. The 5194 is not carried in inventory
and takes 60 to 90 days for delivery.
5196ACL 36-Track Cartridge Tape Subsystem, ACL-equipped CRU packaged in a
Modular Storage System Module
This CRU includes a tape formatter, one cartridge drive, a power supply, a
seven-cartridge ACL, IBM compatible data compression (IDRC), and a cleaning
cartridge. The 5196ACL contains space for an additional 5194ACL.
The 5196ACL may require a Modular Storage System pedestal, depending
on the specific system configuration. 5196 36-track cartridge tape
subsystem, CRU packaged in a Modular
Storage System module. This CRU includes a tape formatter, one cartridge
drive, a power supply, IBM compatible data compression (IDRC), and a
cleaning cartridge. The 5196 contains space for an additional
5194ACL. The 5196 may require a Modular Storage System pedestal,
depending on the specific system configuration. The 5196 is not
carried in inventory and takes 60 to 90 days for delivery.
5193 Automatic Cartridge Loader (ACL) field upgrade kit
This kit contains all the necessary parts to add the seven-cartridge
internal ACL to a 5194 or 5191 installed at a customer site.
Do not order the 5193 as a factory-installed feature. The 5193
is not carried in inventory and takes 60 to 90 days for delivery. 3216 or
ServerNet/DA Fiber-optic host tape controller or device adapter. These
products can support one or two 5194 subsystems when maximum
performance is not required. They support fiber-optic cable lengths from 10
meters to 2 kilometers. Each 3216 is shipped with a 10-meter (33-foot)
fiber-optic cable as the default cable length. Compaq F9-xxx
(K-series) or F12-xxx (S-series) cables can be used up to 500 meters.
The customer must provide cables longer than 500 meters. 5165-1 (for
K-series)
a SCSI BIC to allow the 5194 to be connected to the MFC.
The 5194 does not require
special preventive maintenance. However, the tape path should be cleaned
regularly to ensure trouble-free operation. This is done automatically on
5194ACL units. A cleaning cartridge is shipped with the 5194 as
part of an accessory pack, and must be loaded into the machine at
installation time. For subsystems without an ACL, the word “clean” is
displayed when cleaning is required. When this message appears, a cleaning
cartridge must be inserted to perform the cleaning operation.
The entire 5194 or
5194ACL is a CRU. When service is required, the entire CRU is replaced,
greatly simplifying maintenance. Care must be exercised when installing or
replacing 5194 CRUs as they are very heavy. A 5194ACL CRU
weighs 33.75 kilograms (75 pounds) and a 5194 weighs 22.5 kilograms
(50 pounds). |
